THÌ QUÁ KHỨ HOÀN THÀNH (PAST PERFECT TENSE)
I. CÔNG THỨC (FORMULA)
1. Khẳng định
S + had + V3/ed
Ex: He had gone home before Sarah arrived.
2. Phủ định
S + had not (hadn’t) + V3/ed
Ex: She hadn’t eaten anything before the meeting started.
3. Nghi vấn
Had + S + V3/ed…?
Ex: Had you finished your work before you went home?
II. CÁCH SỬ DỤNG (USAGE)
Hành động xảy ra trước hành động khác trong quá khứ
Dùng để diễn tả hành động đã hoàn tất xảy ra trước một hành động khác trong quá khứ. Hành động xảy ra trước dùng Quá khứ hoàn thành, hành động xảy ra sau dùng Quá khứ đơn.
Ex 1: When Sarah arrived at the party, Paul wasn’t there. He had gone home.
Ex 2: When we got home last night, we found that somebody had broken into the flat.
Ex 3: Karen didn’t want to come to the cinema with us because she had already seen the film.
Ex 4: The man sitting next to me on the plane was very nervous. He had never flown before.

III. DẤU HIỆU NHẬN BIẾT
Thường xuất hiện các từ: before, after, when, by, by the time, by the end of + time in the past…
Ex 1: When I got up this morning, my father had already left.
Ex 2: By the time I met you, I had worked in that company for five years.
Ex 3: When I got there yesterday, the train had already left.
Ex 4: By the time police came last night, the thieves had gone away.
